Humayun Morshed, from Bangladesh has been in real estate since 2001. He is the realtor at  Citywide Real Estate Group in Medford, MA where he works with his broker, Suhail Kaiser, also a Bangladeshi Muslim.

However, when the economy went downhill in 2007, his real estate business also took a hit. He decided to go into the convenience store business. He bought and managed 10 convenience stores in Roxbury, Dorchester and Mattapan. Last year, he came back into the real estate with both feet. He is now a full time realtor  devoting all his time and energy in the real estate field.

He says, “When your house is located near the masjid, your children can grow up in an Islamic environment which develops their character in the right manner.  Middle Pic: Morshed play an active role at the Islamic Cultural Center of Medford where he is a trustee of the masjid. His real estate office is also located on the second floor of the masjid building.. Right Pic: Family pic of Humayun Moshed, wife and his 3 young boys.

He especially enjoys helping Muslims buy their homes near the masjid. He says, “When Muslims are thinking of buying a house, its important they choose a location that is close to the masjid. This is because their house is where they are going to live for the next many years, and where their children will be growing up. When your house is located near the masjid, your children can grow up in an Islamic environment which develops their character in the right manner. They will also grow up in the community that is supportive to their development. So don’t buy your house in an isolated area, cut out from the masjid and cut out from the Muslim community.”

He continues, “When your house is near the masjid, your children will be connected to the masjid and participate in masjid activities. They will also be involved in the local community activities. All this has a positive effect to their development.”

He adds that its better to buy than to rent. He says, “If you are currently paying $2,000 to $3,000 in rent payments, you are essentially paying your landlord’s mortgage and not acquiring anything in the house. On the other hand, when you buy your house, the monthly mortgage payments goes towards the acquisition of your house.”

He says, “Don’t let the down payment discourage you from buying your house. Nowadays, you can buy a house with only 3% down. He also helps buyers get downpayment assistance. He says, “you can get up to $50,000 in down payment assistance depending on the county and state where the house is located.”

“If you don’t want to get into bank financing, I can help buy your house with  owner financing,” he says. He negotiates with sellers to sell their house by offering owner-financing to buyers. He has sold a couple of houses with owner-financing.

In addition to selling residential home, He is also active in selling commercial properties. He currently is selling a convenience store and laundromat in Brockton.

Morshed is very active at the Islamic Cultural Center of Medford, where he is a trustee of the masjid. The masjid is active with 5 times daily salat, youth halakahs, weekend Quran teachings, Islam 101, and also interfaith programs.

He says, “Interfaith activities where you connect with the other religious groups such as the Jewish and Christian communities are important.”  He continues, “The interfaith activities helped us to seal the deal when our masjid was wanting to purchase a plot of land in Peabody, MA for a Muslim cemetery.”

“We wanted to have a Muslim cemetery, which is owned 100% by Muslims. We found a nice plot of land in Peabody but ran into obstacles as some parties objected. Then the Interfaith group president Rev Wendy Miller stepped in and connected us with the head of Peabody Jewish Temple, Dr. Kaden. This cooperation between us as Musilms, together with the Christian community and Jewish community made the deal happen. “

Morshed is also a strong supporter of Muslim candidates running for political positions. He says, “since our children are growing up in this community, its important we support political activities that are aligned with Islamic values. If we don’t get into politics, pretty soon the political situation will be dominated by people who are against Islam, and that would cause hardships for us.”

Morshed’s real estate office is located at the Islamic Center of Medford on the second floor. The address is 43 High Street, Medford, MA 02155. His phone number is 857-237-0023, and his email address is hkmorshed@gmail.com
